Goose Island State Park

Goose Island Sate Park is about 159 miles from New Braunfels, Texas.

We visit Goose Island State Park during the winter months. The weather blessed us this visit with near 80* temperature and calm winds the first two days, then the front blew through. After a rough ride during the afternoon, we awoke to a crisp morning greeting with a beautiful sunrise.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We avoid the park in the summer due to the high temperatures and mosquitoes.

There are three camping areas, a red bay woodlands and two bay fronts. We have stayed at both bay front areas. This trip we pulled into the Aransas Bay bridge side. The park was deeded during the ’30s. I do not know when the campsite shelters were constructed. The hookups seem opposite of what they should be. Despite that mild inconvenience, the park is a wonderful place to enjoy. One can hike, fish, kayak, visit the Big Tree, geocache, bird watch, head into Rockport for a good seafood dinner, or, simply, relax.

The Big Tree with its 11-foot diameter stands 44-feet high with an impressive crown of 89-feet. It is estimated at over 1,000 years old.

If you enjoy photography, the park offers plenty of interesting opportunities, especially birds. If you come at the right time, you may even spot whooping cranes. The park ranger offers a guided birding tour on select mornings. Unfortunately, our mornings came with a thick fog cover until the front blew in.

The park is located on two bays, the St. Charles and the Aransas, just about 40 miles north of Corpus Christi, Texas. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid-30s, the Recreation Hall still stands. It is available for group activities.

Finally, one can fish or take a stroll along the 1620-foot long Fishing Pier.

In close proximity are the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and the Fulton Mansion State Historic Site. Both worthy of their on visits. Whatever one chooses, it is all good.
